We've Partnered with Canon Australia: Inside Our Sydney Workshop

June 10 Written By Jesse Preston

This one is big for us! We hosted our very first workshop with Canon Australia!

For a business that started in a second bedroom, partnering with a name like Canon is one of those moments that makes you stop and take it in. And the first thing we got to do together was take our workshop to Sydney.

The same workshop, fine-tuned

The Sydney workshop was, at its core, the same two-day format we ran in Brisbane. But practice makes perfect, and we used everything we learned the first time to sharpen it.

The biggest change came straight from the Brisbane feedback. People there told us they wanted more hands-on time, so this time I got the students far more involved. Less watching, more doing. We ran portrait photography on day one and product photography on day two, and giving people the camera earlier and more often completely changed the energy in the room.

The room Canon didn't expect

Here's the part that genuinely surprised the team: every single person who attended was a woman.

Now, whether that matters or not is up for debate, but it's something many people still find surprising in an industry that's traditionally been male-dominated. As a female founder, I thought it was pretty special to see a room full of women investing in themselves, building new skills and backing their creative ambitions.

The mix of people was just as interesting as the numbers. We had social media managers, marketing managers, and photographers shooting all sorts of different work. And we had a real spread of experience: Some people who had never picked up a camera for photography in their lives, sitting alongside others who already had years of shooting. Teaching to that range is a challenge I love and showcasing that we can all learn from each other.

Inside Canon's HQ studio

Running it in Canon's HQ studio was something else. The space is incredible, and it lifted the entire experience.

One of my favourite touches was that students could actually get hands-on with Canon's gear, whether during the workshop or after it. Being able to pick up something you might be thinking about investing in, and try it in a real shooting environment, is the kind of thing you just can't get from a tutorial.

The feedback

The feedback from both days was wonderful, and it meant even more knowing how much we'd refined things since Brisbane. Watching people who'd never shot before walk out feeling excited and confident to start shooting, in just two days, is exactly why we do this.

Here's some of the shots we captured on the day together!

What's next with Canon

This is just the start. Being Canon Creators means there's a lot more coming this year, more events, more workshops, and more chances to teach in rooms like this one.

If you've been waiting for a sign to back yourself and invest your learning, this is it. Keep an eye out for our next dates!
